2010 Emmy Winners Have a Different Mix Than Usual
The 2010 Emmy winners were fairly diverse last night. In fact, some of the 2010 Emmy winners were brand new, as the usual Emmy winners had somewhat of a hard time. Since new shows like Glee, Modern Family, The Good Wife and others were in contention, there were bound to be some new champions. What’s more, established shows like 30 Rock and Lost had no luck, while Mad Men was largely shut out until the inevitable Best Drama victory. Overall, the 2010 Emmy winners were a mix of old and new – and some were even surprising picks.
The night started well for the year’s top new comedies, as Modern Family won first for Best Supporting Actor Eric Stonestreet, and for Best Writing. But Glee struck back with wins for Jane Lynch, and for Best Director Ryan Murphy. Afterward, they stayed in the background until their climactic Best Comedy showdown.
Later on, the 2010 Emmy winners formed an interesting mix. Breaking Bad and The Good Wife dominated the acting categories, as Bryan Cranston’s third straight win came after Aaron Paul finally prevailed. It looked as if The Good Wife would also get two wins, after Archie Panjabi upset the Mad Men women for supporting actress. Yet Julianna Margulies was herself upset by Kyra Sedgwick, after years of coming up short for The Closer.
In the comedy categories, the 2010 Emmy winners showed more upheaval. 30 Rock came up completely short, after three straight years of dominance. Alec Baldwin’s reign was ended by Jim Parsons, while Edie Falco held off Tina Fey and fellow Showtime nominee Toni Colette.
Meanwhile, the reality show competition award finally changed hands, as Top Chef overtook The Amazing Race. But some streaks didn’t end, as The Daily Show won yet again for Variety Series, and spared NBC from broadcasting a Conan O’Brien victory speech.
In the miniseries and TV movie segments, the 2010 Emmy winners included the usual HBO dominance. The Pacific got the most nominations, and won Best Miniseries in a walk, to make it the most honored program of the year with eight wins. Yet HBO’s Temple Grandin nearly caught it, as it won the most awards of the broadcast, and took seven trophies overall.
