He was 88. Mr. Penn's older brother, photographer Irving Penn, died in October 2009. Arthur Penn's career was one of both frustration and triumph. He left Hollywood in 1959, after Warner Bros.' altering of his debut film, "The Left Handed Gun" starring Paul Newman, and then years later it seemed that Hollywood left him.
