Like every genre of writing, travel writing also requires some iota of passion which is a passion for travelling. They are completely two different things which should not be confused for each other. For a person to reach the stature of a renowned and accomplished travel writer or even to earn a little admiration from some readers, one needs to know that travel writing should benefit the readers in the first place.
A travel writer needs to know that the readers do not want to know the boring nitty-gritty like how much time the travel writer spent at the bus stand or how a particular ingredient in a local delicacy led his stomach to constipation. A travel writer should try and inform the readers about the culture, the distance from a particular place to another and the other important features of the place. Some of the most important things that should be given prime focus by a travel writer are food, Weather, best time to go to the place and yes the famous market areas that the place shelters. Remember there should be something for everyone. The tricks of the trade lie hidden in the fact that a travel writer should try and make things simpler for the tourists. This includes telling them how to get to a place in a faster and a cheaper way. If a travel writer is being able to make things simpler for the tourists by any degree, it is a real success.
A travel writer should always be on the go. This does not mean that one needs to become a vagabond but it is important to experience different cultures and talk to people. Travelling not only helps a person open up to various different possibilities and experiences, it also helps a person grow. And for that matter for a travel writer it is but essential to feel the fresh air and take in the aroma of a local cuisine of a particular place in order to translate the experience into written words. This is closely followed up by another passion that one needs to cultivate in order to become a successful travel writer which is reading. Many famous travel narratives help a great deal to decode the techniques to be opted for travel writing. One also needs to be a good writer if not a great one at that.
Another main point is to do research about the place. Even if one misses out on a few experiences in the city, the research can go a long way in helping give a lively and almost-self-experienced description of the place. Most of the accomplished travel writers try and keep the articles short and crisp. Therefore, it is important to compare written article with the ones which are published in the magazines. To be even more sure, ask a critic friend to read and compare the written article with that of published in the travel magazine. And remember self editing is the key.
