Brandon Jacobs: Throwing helmet into stands ‘was a mistake’
Upon further review, Brandon Jacobs knew he was wrong.
In a 38-14 loss in which Jacobs was flagged for a personal foul for a late hit and gained only eight yards on four carries, the New York Giants’ running back came off the field, threw his helmet at the bench — and missed. It flew into the stands in Indianapolis and, after the game, a testy Jacobs was quick.
“I was a little mad, but to be honest with you, it was a mistake,” Jacobs said. “I did not mean to do that and everybody who knows me knows I did not mean to do something like that. The whole world could fall down on me and I wouldn’t have done anything like that.”
The Giants had to bribe the fan who caught the helmet with a ball in order to get it back, not that Jacobs, who apologized to the fan, the city of Indianapolis and the Giants and seems likely to draw a fine from the NFL, needed it the rest of the game.
“We were losing the game and I was mad,” Jacobs said, adding that he lost control of the helmet because it became stuck on adhesive tape on his glove. “No one wants to lose, and I kind of lost my cool.”
