Munching is highlight of 2010 Ford Arts, Beats & Eats festival

An estimated 2,000 festival goers were on the streets of Royal Oak at 1 p.m., two hours after the opening of the2010 Ford Arts, Beats & Eats festival, said festival committee member and Royal Oak civic activist Sandra Wilkins.

“Everything is open now – all the music, all the restaurants,” said festival staffer Jennifer Accavitti, although a few scattered restaurants failed to open their kiosks for today’s lunch hour.

People concerned about parking should go to twitter.com and search for “[at]artsbeatseats” for real-time status reports of the 10 local parking lots ($ 15 each) and two remote sites ($ 10), said parking status coordinator Keira Chartier.

Samantha Jolivet and her twin Charlotte Jolivet, 18 months old, noshed from kiosk to kiosk with their mom Wendy Jolivet, 34, of Sterling Heights.

They definitely like Kola’s Food Factory pierogi “and we’re going to try those doughy cinnamon sticks – churros,” their mother said as she pushed the twins along in a side-by-side double stroller.

Three feet away, their 10-month-old cousin Rachel Helgren of Freeland was digging the same festival goodies.

“Oh, yeah, she loves it,” her mother Heidi Helgren said.

The Oakland County Health Division had four inspectors checking the restaurants.

Referring to her inspection clipboard, inspector Kelli Carpenter-Crawford said, “Everything looks good but I can’t talk to you.”

Outside Sangria restaurant, where Detroit Red Wings players have celebrated several Stanley Cup championships, owner Luigi Cutraro crowed about the festival excitement.

“We’ve been trying, trying, trying” to get the festival away from Pontiac and relocated in Royal Oak, Cutraro said. This is the first time that Arts, Beats & Eats, which lasts the four days of Labor Day weekend, has been in Royal Oak.

Festival impresario Jon Witz “said it couldn’t be done, but I said, ‘Jon, yes we can do it,’ “ Cutraro said.
